Hydrant Flushing

Newport Public Works will be flushing water mains throughout the City for about three weeks beginning this week (September 26th). The purpose of the flushing is to remove sediment buildup in the mains and to verify the safe operation of the hydrants and valves. The flushing may result in temporary discoloration of water, caused by small particles and minerals being dislodged during the flushing in addition of possible reductions in pressure. It is recommended that water usage be reduced during this time.

Discoloration of the water will be temporary and is not harmful for consumption. However, the discolored water might stain your laundry, especially white materials as well as the possible staining of plumbing fixtures. Therefore, please avoid doing laundry during the times of discoloration.

Prior to washing clothes, please check the cold water for possible discoloration. If the water is discolored, please run the cold water for a minute or two or until the water clears up. If it does not clear up, please try again after waiting 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the City cannot fully guarantee the safety of doing laundry and/or the possibility of discoloration even during the evenings as the water system will have several disruptions.

Hydrant flushing is performed between 7:00am and 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. For more information about hydrant flushing, please contact Newport Public Works at 651-459-2475.
