Historical Presentation:  "The Battle Of Kaposia, 1842:  Intertribal Conflict In The Red Rock Area" on April 12th at 6pm.

HPC Presentation 04-12-23

Spend an evening learning about Newport’s Native American history, focusing on the “Battle of Kaposia” that took place in June, 1842, when approximately one hundred Ojibwe (Chippewa) warriors from northern Minnesota launched a surprise attack on the Dakota (Sioux) village of Kaposia, then located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in modern-day South St. Paul.  Several early settlers in the Red Rock community witnessed the fighting, which lasted several hours and ranged over several miles along the banks of the Mississippi between present-day Newport, South St. Paul, and Pig’s Eye.  The name of Battle Creek Regional Park commemorates the intertribal skirmish.
