In 2011, the City of Newport was notified that Washington County would be reducing its library budget in 2012 and therefore closing the Newport Public Library. In order to keep it open for the residents of Newport, the City worked with Washington County to establish a joint powers agreement for the oversight and management of the Library.
The City took over the oversight and management January 1, 2012 and opened the Newport Library and Community Center for residents to enjoy. Since then, the City and County have worked together to maintain the Library and Community Center by updating the collection and equipment and hosting programs for the patrons to enjoy.
With the help of several volunteers and the Library and Community Center Coordinator, the City is able to keep the Library and Community Center open the above hours during the week. The City has also received numerous donations since it took over in 2012 and has over 6,000 items in its catalog. The Library and Community Center Coordinator, Jamie Smith, worked hard to create a Dewey Decimal System for all of the items to establish a more concrete cataloging system.
The following services are offered at the Library and Community Center: books, magazines, movies, games, public computers, printer, copier, fax machine, and wireless access. Residents may also check out the Library to use as a meeting room.

The Library and Community Center has several programs throughout the year. If you would like to receive email notifications of programs, please contact Jamie Smith, Library and Community Center Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Check the City's homepage and calendar for updates. Below are some pictures from programs this past year.
P.A.W.S. to Read
The Newport Public Library came into existence by the signing of Ordinance #2 in November 1889 and was established for the "use and benefit" of the citizens of Newport. Library service was broadened to include all people who came from the surrounding area, regardless of address. The first library was in an old schoolhouse and was put together with the help of eager citizens who volunteered their time and efforts. The Library was relocated in 1897 to its current location. The Library ran independently for over 90 years before being incorporated into the Washington County system in 1981.
Since the beginning, the Newport Library has been sustained by a long succession of enthusiastic volunteers and librarians. The City is excited to continue this tradition for the Library and Community Center and strives to keep it beautiful and a place that is enjoyable for its patrons.
Washington County installed a kiosk at the Newport Transit Station, 250 Red Rock Crossing, for residents to utilize for checking out items through the Washington County Library system. Residents can reserve items online at www.co.washington.mn.us/library. Once a resident's items are ready, they may pick them up and drop them off at the Transit Station.
